Importance of Early Exposure Programs

Workforce Diversity

hands

Increasing diversity can aid in addressing the current shortage and provide better representation of the diverse patient population.

dna

Early exposure programs afford students the opportunity to discover their interest in potential career paths.

trainees

Exposing students to professionals in the genetics field can increase their curiosity and willingness to gain a deeper understanding of the medical speciality.

The E3 Genomics Pathways Program directly supports ACMG’s 2025-2029 Strategic Plan, particularly under Pillar 4: Expanding the genetics and genomics workforce. The program aligns with key objectives to promote innovative training paths and highlight career opportunities for high school juniors, seniors, and community college/undergraduate students.

The program also addresses national goals set by the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) Action Agenda and the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) Workshop on Improving Diversity in the Genomics Workforce¹. By providing early exposure to genomics careers and connecting students from minority-serving institutions and community colleges with career networks, the program plays a pivotal role in developing a diverse and inclusive genomics workforce.

2025 Partners

sacnas

The Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics & Native Americans in Science (SACNAS)

SACNAS is dedicated to empowering Chicano/Hispanic and Native American students and professionals in their pursuit of advanced degrees and careers in STEM fields. With over 10,000 members and more than 140 chapters across the U.S. and Puerto Rico, SACNAS plays a key role in fostering diversity and inclusion in science and technology.

ACMG is collaborating with SACNAS student chapters from the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) and Los Angeles Valley College (a provisional SACNAS chapter) to identify promising undergraduate students for participation in the E3 Genomic Pathways pilot program. UCLA and Los Angeles Valley College serve a diverse student body, with a significant percentage of students from low-income backgrounds, making this partnership an important step in expanding opportunities for underrepresented groups in STEM.

MEET THE LA CAREER ACADEMY

Los Angeles Convention Center Career Academy Overview

Launched in 2021, the LA Career Academy supports the LA Mayoral Executive Directives on gender and racial equity by providing underserved youth in Los Angeles with exposure to a variety of career paths. Since its inception, 76 students from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds have participated. The Career Academy will collaborate with ACMG to:

  • Identify students for the E3 Genomics Pathways Program
  • Arrange logistics and transportation for participants
  • Survey students to gather feedback on the program’s impact and effectiveness
ClinGen logo

ClinGen

The Clinical Genome Resource (ClinGen) is a National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded resource dedicated to building a central resource that defines the clinical relevance of genes and variants for use in precision medicine and research. The ClinGen team is sharing educational resources to support the E3: Genomics Pathways Program Phase 2 (Equip). ClinGen is sharing educational initiatives (e.g., genomics careers panel series, etc.) to provide scholars with valuable insights into the field and help them explore diverse career pathways in medical genetics.
